4 Healthy Halloween Candies to have on Hand for the Holidays

As the back-to-school feeling kicks off again and the evenings become longer, Autumn starts to slowly settle in and with it, the excitement for Halloween. While it may be the undisputed hallmark occasion for consuming candies and inducing a sugar coma, not all sweet treats have to be bad. Here, we share 4 of our favourite healthy Halloween recipes to celebrate the season of ghouls and ghosts with a sweet tooth.

1. Homemade Halloween Popcorn 

A healthy twist on an instant classic that’s ready in no time. Preparing a vat of popcorn cooked on a stovetop in coconut oil and seasoned with spices and flavours of your choice is an easy, fail-safe way of cheating your way past trick or treaters this year.

We recommend creating micro-batches and sealing them in airtight glass jars to stay fresh and ready to dish out at a doorbell’s notice. 

Halloween Popcorn

Ingredients:

  • 2 Tablespoons Coconut Oil
  • ¼ Cup Popcorn Kernels
  • Sea Salt and Spices for Seasoning

Instructions:

  1. Place the corn kernels and oil in a 3-quart pot over medium heat and cover the pot with a lid. Shake the pot constantly as popcorn pops. 
  2. When popping slows to a few seconds in-between pops, after about 3 to 5 minutes, remove the pot from heat and pour popcorn into a large bowl. 
  3. Season with sea salt or spices of your choice.
  4. Store in a vacuum-sealed or airtight screw-top jar.

2. Chocolate Peanut Butter Crunch Bars

With only 5 ingredients and zero baking required, these nutty treats are ready in no time and free from the processed sugars often found in packaged candy bars. Store them in a sealed, airtight container and they can last for up to 4 weeks, provided of course that sticky fingers don’t find them first!

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups crispy rice cereal
  • 1 1/2 cups chocolate chips 
  • 1 cup peanut butter 
  • 1/2 cup maple syrup
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil OR grass fed butter

Instructions:

  1. Line an 8 x 8-inch baking dish or deep baking tray of choice with parchment paper and set aside.
  2. Add crispy rice cereal into a large mixing bowl and set aside. In a microwave safe bowl or stovetop, combine all your other ingredients and heat until melted. Remove from microwave/off stove and whisk until completely incorporated.
  3. Pour the chocolate/peanut butter mixture over the crispy rice cereal and mix until combined. Pour into the lined baking dish and refrigerate until firm (at least an hour). Remove and cut into bars. 

3. Pumpkin Coconut Granola

Think two steps ahead with this thoughtful Halloween treat that can be dished out in paper bags to trick or treaters, or gifted to their parents to share out for breakfast the following morning. Nutty and just slightly sweet, this granola lets you enter into the Fall on the right foot. Loaded with nutrients and minerals, you can serve it over jam-covered yoghurt for a blood-spattered treat to fit the holidays. 

Halloween granola

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup coconut oil melted
  • 1 cup pumpkin puree
  • 3/4 cup honey
  • 2 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 2 tsp. pumpkin spice
  • 2 tsp sea salt
  • 6 cups rolled oats
  • 1 1/4 cup whole raw almonds
  • 1 1/4 cup whole pistachios
  • 2 cups shredded coconut

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°.
  2. In a very large mixing bowl, combine the melted coconut oil, pumpkin puree, honey, vanilla and sea salt until well combined. Toss the remaining ingredients, except the dried apricots, in the bowl and mix until everything is well coated.
  3. Spread the mixture over two separate cookie sheets. Bake at 350° for 15 minutes. Stir the mixture and bake an additional 15 minutes. If the mixture is still moist, bake an additional 5-10 minutes.
  4. Mix in the dried apricots and spread the baked mixture over a wax paper on your countertop. Allow to cool to room temperature. Store in an airtight container such as our Pearl Mariposa glass jar.

4. Halloween Punch for Kids

A perfect in-between for kids to sip on while grown-ups sip something stronger. Made with raspberry frozen yoghurt or acai for a deep blood-purple hue worthy of the spookiest monsters, this punch looks great served from ribbed glass jars with a fresh fruit garnish of your choice.

Halloween Punch

Ingredients:  

  • 4 ounces lemon-lime soda 
  • 4 ounces 100% grape juice 
  • 1 scoop purple ice cream sorbet, frozen yoghurt or Acai

Instructions:

  1. In a glass of your choice combine grape juice and soda.
  2. Top with ice cream.
  3. Add a Halloween straw and enjoy!
